Adventure #214: 棟篤食 Stand Up Eating

Saturday again and we had to wait for the older one to finish her class. So we wandered along the streets just off Leighton Road, near St. Paul Hospital.  It is a very interesting area, right next to the prosperous CWB area, all these old buildings just waiting to be redeveloped.  But in the mean time, the bottom floors are occupied by many interesting eateries.

There is a Japanese green tea ice cream/dessert shop, a waffle shop serving sweet and savory (???) waffles, a bakery which looks like it has been there since the buildings were built.  Also newly opened is a Hello Kitty noodle shop and the queue for that bowl of noodle went all the way round the corner!  Well, Hello Kitty is not our thing, so we went to try a more traditional looking noodle shop with a highly amusing English name!

The decor on the wall is old Hong Kong, very tastefully done.

The restaurant itself looks a bit tired. And the floor (likely due to the materials used) is highly slippery......walk very slowly!

The pork neck dry flat noodle with chilly oil.  Very tasty and the bowl of accompanying soup is rather interesting.

Dry scrimp powder (I think that is the translation of what it is) noodle.  Rather good but not as good as the one we had in Macau. One day we must make it back there again. The hour ferry ride just seemed so far away these days.

Deep friend tofu. Very light and interesting. Worth a try.

Various type of dumpling in your choose of sauce. We had pork and veggy dumpling in chilli oil. Nice.

An interesting restaurant.  Decor a bit old and some of the dishes are better than others.  For a quick and simple meal in CWB, a good place to go.

Adventure #213: Pitt Street Koay Teow Th'ng (Penang)

When in Penang, we revisited some of the usual joints we ate at last time.  A number of them REALLY let us down.  As the Malaysians would say - jatuh standard lah (standard has fallen).  So we searched and searched on the net for new recommendations.

One place that kept popping up was Pitt Street Koay Teow Th'ng or Pitt Street ho fun soup. This shop is actually on Carnavan Street but it was originally located at Jalan Masjid Kapitan Keling (formerly known as Pitt Street), hence the owner decided to retain its name and I guess along with it, its old customer base!

Boss man hard at work making ho fun soup when we arrived.

The soup version.  The fish balls were made of eel and unlike the normal fish balls, these don't bounce so much but rather melts in your mouth.  Really interesting! And the pork slices had been tenderized by beating it senseless! LOL! As such the pork pieces were smooth and tender.

The dried version for the kids.

And as always, extra ingredients for G!

Looks like the locals really love this joint too!

We were very pleased with this find.  Not only was the ho fun soup tasty, it was different, rather unique.  Good job!

Adventure #212: Lam Kee Ipoh Kuehtiau (Ipoh)

This Easter we were back in KL. We had such a great time on our Malaysia road (food) trip back in 2012, we decided to do it again, although this time we would be taking a more direct route, stopping only in Ipoh for lunch and then straight to Penang.

Last time, we stopped at Thean Chun Coffee Shop for the famous Ipoh ho fun and we loved it.  This time, some friends from Ipoh recommended this Ipoh ho fun joint saying this is where local goes.  We arrived just before lunch time, so were able to eat before the lunch time crowded.

We were early, so the boss personally cooked for us.

Noodle in soup.

Noodle in sauce, kids usually prefer this.

Extra chicken for G!

The ho fun was good and chicken soft but it lack the "omph".  Regardless of the locals think, personally I still prefer the one at Thean Chun Coffee Shop.

Adventure #211: Peking Garden (Central)

Since it re-opened after renovation (which was at least a couple of years ago) we have not been back. Mainly because it is so popular (particularly with the tourists) and we can never get a booking (we are rather last minute people).  This time mum-in-law in town and once again G has a craving for Peking Duck, and with some planning ahead we finally got a table for dinner on a Saturday night.

When we first walked in, the first thing to hit us was that the decor was very nice. Next came the realisation that most of the patrons were either Westerners or tourists. Starting to doubt the quality of food but too late to back out.

While we consider the menu, the little one went round taking photos of the decorations and the restaurant.

Starter - smoked fish, good.
Seafood and vermicelli pot, excellent, very tasty.
A traditional Beijing/Shanghainese dish made from egg white. Kids' favourite.
Fish soup, tasted much better than it looked.
And finally the main dish for the evening - Peking Duck. Complete with a carving performance.
Chinese cabbage with Chinese ham, another traditional dish. Again very good, not too salty.
Buns - beef buns and onion buns.  We were so full, we had to take them home.  The beef bun admittedly not as good those served by Muslim eateries.
Half way through the meal, a chef came out for a noodle "pulling" performance.  Definitely a tourists thing. Kids were entertained.

We were very impressed by both the decor and the quality of the food served.  Particularly good for visitors.

Adventure #210: Flint

Bored after work today, looking for a close by restaurant for dinner and we deiced on Flint at the Marriot Hotel.  This used to JW California.  They have completely refurbished it.  I like the decor.  A bit retro.

The pre-dinner bread rolls.  Warm and rustic. Very appetising.

My clam chowder. Very rich and creamy.  Not as good as the ones we had in New England and it was delicious.

Lobster bisque.  Nice but I preferred the chowder.

Six point Berkshire black pork chop.  The chop was tender and juicy.  But so much meat, not something I would have ordered.

My veal cheek.  Presentation was excellent, so was the dish.

Loved it!

I really enjoyed the food and once again I over ate.  Next time I will just have the veal cheek!

Adventure #209: The Niseko Supply Company (Take 2) (Hirafu)

TNSC is one of our favourite lunch time stop overs.  A simple galette and crepe for lunch followed by a nice cup of coffee.  We didn't manage to bring the kids here last time, so we tried to book a table for dinner after our lunch. We were told that they only serve raclette or fondue at night. It's a set menu with crepes for dessert. No choice. And since we have raclette at home a lot, we chose the fondue instead.

Salad and starter. I can't remember what the starter was now but it was not bad.

Here's the fondue! Very nice, especially in such cold weather!

And then the crepes the kids were waiting for! Super delicious!

Simple food, cosy atmosphere. Family. Such happiness.
