Adventure #58: Thean Chun Coffee Shop (Ipoh)

During this trip to KL, we decided to do a mini road trip (or more appropriately a food trip) to show the kids there is more to Malaysia than KLCC and One Utama.  And since this is a food trip, we cannot not stop by Ipoh and Penang, the 2 food capitals of Malaysia.

Ipoh is famous for its ho fun 河粉 and bean sprouts 芽菜.  The popular belief is that the water quality in Ipoh is different and therefore the ho fun and bean sprouts produced in Ipoh are of superior quality.  As such, the most famous food in Ipoh is chicken hofun 雞絲河粉 and been sprouts with chicken 芽菜.

Day 1, after a detour to Felda Residence Hot Springs, we arrived in Ipoh late afternoon and rushed to Ipoh's Old Town in search of Thean Chun Coffee Shop hoping to sample the 雞絲河粉 before it closes at 4.30pm.  Even with the GPS, the Old Town with all the one-way streets is a difficult place to navigate.  But we managed to get there at 4pm! Phew!

The coffee shop has a row of mirrors lining one side of the wall - this is because it was a barber shop in its previous life (some 50 odd years ago)!  Gives the shop a little character.

The food is prepared solely by the old chef who looked not a day younger than 70.  So, be patient with your order, it's well worth the wait.

Finally, the ho fun soup arrived.

Just look at the ho fun, silky smooth. And it tasted as good as it looked!

Dry ho fun 撈河 was equally yummy!

So good that we finished 6 bowls of ho fun and an extra plate of chicken!

Very satisfied with our late lunch. So, now to the hotel and then round 2!
