Adventure #14: 阿鴻小吃

Today, we decided to try Hung's Delicacies in North Point.  No one is available to join us, so just G and I.  We tried to get there early in order to avoid the dinner crowd but unfortunately work got in the way and we arrived at around 7.15pm.  There was already a queue there.  After putting down our name on the self-service reservation sheet, we sat down to wait for our turn.

Hung is a Chiuchow restaurant and some of its specialities include duck jaw 滷水鴨下巴 and 芥末雞腳筋 chicken feet tendon.......hmmmm, not our thing.

About 40 minutes later, we were seated.  Since there were only 2 of us (still on the diet), we can only order limited dishes. We started with what we came for - 蔡瀾撈麵 aka 豬油撈麵! It was amazingly good and well worth the wait!

Sorry about the quality of the photo, can't wait to get my hands on it!

We also ordered the goose and pigs intestine 滷水鵝片大腸 and fried squid cakes.  The goose dish was simply excellent.  The squid cakes dish was good in its own right but it didn't gel with the other dishes, so may be next time we will give it a miss.

Definitely a place we will return to but may consider doing a drive-by-and-take-away.

Adventure #13: 瑞記咖啡

A rainy Sunday! Trip to Big Wave Bay Beach downed the drain.  Thought we'd take the kids to some where different - a local food place in Sheung Wan Cooked Food Center (or what we call Hawker Center).

Parked the car by the street behind the Sheung Wan Market and tried to get to the cooked food center from the back.  Big-ish mistake.  For those of you who have not been to a HK 街市, the layout is normally as such - wet market on the G/F and/or 1/F and cooked food center on the top floor, in this case 2/F. The escalator to the cooked food center was not working, so we took the lift which only stopped at the 1/F. We had to walk through the wet market to get to our destination.

The little one kept covering her nose and complained of the smell, although half way through she was absolutely fascinated by the man cleaning out a cow's head that she momentarily forgotten about the smell.  The older one just quietly tolerated the journey.  Luckily, when we got to the 2/F, the place was clean and air-conditioned. Phew!!!

Finally, we made it to 瑞記, an old style HK "tea place".

Since this is a 茶餐廳, it serves the usual local food such as milk tea, instant noodles, toast etc. We ordered instant noodles for the kids (sadly, this is their favourite food) and we had the beef and egg sandwich 鹹牛肉蛋治 washed down with the bottled milk tea.  The sandwich is ok but the bottled milk tea is very cool.

And the damage........in this inflationary environment......only HK$112!

Adventure #12: 生記

There are 2 生記 in Shueng Wan.  The old shop only sells porridge and the new shop which is next to it sells both porridge and beef noodle.  We went for lunch at the new shop.  Ordered porridge for the kids and noodles for ourselves.  The porridge is very Cantonese style, no MSG (at least we can't taste much) but a little bland for us.  Liked the beef noodle 清湯牛腩麵 better.

Adventure #11: 避風塘興記

This Friday we wanted to try 避風塘興記 but only Betty and Samson were able to join us.  Was a bit worried initially about not being able to eat all the different type of dishes we wanted but ..... thanks to Betty and Samson we did brilliantly!

It was the Friday of our week-long investors forum, so I didn't want to remain in the office.  We arrived early and as always G was already hungry and had to munch on the famous HK wafer 雞蛋仔 which is conveniently located downstairs from the restaurant!

We started with 4 of the popular dishes:

The starter - 避風塘六小福 Seeing that we only ordered 4 dishes (despite the fact that we told her this was our initial order, we would order more later), the lady failed to tell us this dish came in 2 sizes - standard and small, she gave us the fairly large standard one. But we cleared it!

The popular 韭菜花 (don't know the English name)

The must have - Chili Crab in lots of fried garlic 避風塘炒蟹

A gamble - Clams in "salty water" 油鹽水蜆

As we said initially, we ordered more.  We had 蒜茸粉絲蒸蟶子 (another shell fish), salt and pepper fried fish 椒鹽泥鯭 but the star dish of all is the $48 duck ho fan soup! So GOOD!

We will be back, if only just for the duck ho fan soup.

Adventure #10: 清真牛肉館

This Sat we had to go back to the 跌打醫館 at Kowloon City.  Before the visit, we stopped by at 清真牛肉館 for lunch.  As always, we had to order their signature dishes - the beef cake and the curry lamb.
The extra juicy beef cake.  We took a couple home for tea.  G said it is not as nice as when it was fresh but I think it is good enough for me!

The curry lamb - soooo yummy.  The older one is now a convert!

Adventure #9: BO Innovation

16 September was our 16th wedding anniversary. So, we went for dinner by ourselves.  We wanted to have something formal but didn't want something too heavy (still on the diet).  In the end, we settled for BO Innovation, an Asian molecular cuisine.  It is kind of the Chinese version of Fat Duck.

We chose from one of the three tasting menus.

Instead of bread, they served us Hong Kong style wafers 鹹的港式雞蛋仔 with 36-month Iberico ham and English mustard inside.  Nice but I think G preferred the sweet one.

Here are some of our 10 courses:

This is a puree of Chinese Century Egg and Pickled Ginger with dry ice - so you only eat the bubbles!

This is pan-fried Foie Gras with a preserved vegetable (梅菜) ice cream. I love the foie gras.....not too sure about the ice cream.....

This is one of their signature dish, Shanghai Xiao Long Pao 招牌小籠包.

For our mains, we had suckling pig with apple puree and peas.  Really good.  We were told that the pig was cooked under low heat for hours.  The meat was very tender and the skin - crackling!

After dessert which was pineapples in 3 ways, they gave us a basket of "oldies" goodies 懷舊糖果 - very "sweet".

Adventure #8: 順興車仔麵茶餐廳

Today is the day after Mid-Autumn Festival and a public holiday in HK.  We woke up late and our thoughts immediately went to food.  After consulting our food books, we drove to Tai Hang in search of 順興車仔麵茶餐廳.

The older one tried the 豬扒炒公仔麵 which was good but not unusual.  What the little one and I loved was the 醬爆豬頸肉飯.

But the specialty in this shop is 車仔麵, so we had to order one.  The 車仔麵 was really good. G particularly liked the (pigs blood) and I loved the 齋卜 which not many places serve. The meal was excellent!

Adventure #7: Ruamjai Thai

One of G's favourite food is the Duck Noodle Soup at Chatuchak Market in Bangkok. So, when he saw that Ruamjai Thai Restaurant also serves Duck Noodle Soup, he can't wait to try it. So, after the kids' classes on Sat, we drove over to Kowloon City.

Here's the Duck Noodle Soup. Looks very good, also taste very good but not as good as that in Chatuchak Market. Good enough for HK.

After lunch, while walking back to the car, we walked past a 跌打醫館This one looks very clean and modern, so we went in and had G's wrist checked. He sprained it while working out last week. So, the young doctor rubbed his wrist with Chinese medicine and then wrapped it with Chinese herbs. I wish I took a picture of it. Nevermind, it is likely that we will go back to the Chinese doctor next Sat. I will remember to take one. Better check which other restaurant to try next Sat!

Adventure #6: 滿江紅小甜甜

A couple of days ago, I found on the shelf a food book I bought a while back. This book lists all the good eateries (in the writer's opinion) where one can eat good food for less than $100 per head - he calls them 平民飯店。One more reference book for me.

This week G was away in Korea visiting HQ. I assumed he will be wined and dined, so a perfect opportunity to try the simpler and cheaper places recommended in this book. Initially I chose a place in North Point where one of the famous dishes is 豬油撈. Unfortunately, it was closed for renovation. So, we went to 滿江紅小甜甜instead. This is a funny eatery combining a Sichuan restaurant and a dessert shop.

For our mains, we ordered Beef in Spicy Hotpot (very small), a sour fish soup and a baked clams. All yummy.

The 酸菜魚湯 is very good

So is the baked clams, as good as the stir-fried clams from Yu Wo

To finish off the meal, we had 杏仁蛋白 and 湯圓 for dessert。The former is terrible - too thick but the later is very good - 夠薑!

Adventure #5: 滾得棧

After the summer, G and I decided to go on a diet, get slimmer and fitter. I had a head start, losing about 8-10 lbs when G and the kids were away in KL. Soon after he started at his new job, G joined the gym downstairs. We aim to hit the gym 2-3 times a week. This culinary adventure is not doing our waistline any favour. Any how we cannot and do not want to stop now - it is too much fun! So, I set out to look for some less fattening options. While browsing the openrice website and I came across the picture above.

Aha, hotpot! And a special tomato crab soup base too, how unusual. This time we were joined by our eating buddy Fred. Still no 水煮 but he is happy to try the crab.

The soup base is indeed interesting and the ingredients are also very good. Worth trying is the beef (from the cow's neck) and the hand made balls.

And the older one is really into steak lately, this is some where we can bring her. The little one may just tag along if we let her have Gong Chai Mee (instant noodle) with the hotpot!
