Adventure #31: 滬揚川上海料理

We often frequent this little restaurant during our Friday night CWB shopping trips.  The food quality varies depending on the dishes ordered. We tried a number of dishes over the years and only like a couple.  We usually only order肉末粉絲 mince meat in glass noodle and 砂鍋雲吞雞 chicken wanton soup for dinner for the two of us.

Today, we were in a bit of a hurry.  We came to CWB to get some stuff for the new flat but the Christmas shopping crowd was just unbelievable! Since it was lunch, we ordered something slightly different.

The 肉末粉絲 is still the best

The noodle  蔥油拌- long on onion and sauce but short on taste

The 小籠包 could be better
I guess we will stick to our usually dishes in the future.

Adventure #30: Sabah

Today we were at Wanchai getting some stuff for the new flat.  And since we were there, we went to try out (again....we were there years ago and the food did not entice us to return) the most well known Malaysian restaurant, Sabah.  After much disappointment over the years, we almost never go for Malaysian food (other than the 蝦麵店) in HK.  However, we have heard quite a few positive comments on Sabah recently from some fellow Malaysians, so here we are.

The first alarm bell - the menu has all sorts of curry including curry rogan josh.....how is that Malaysian?

The second alarm bell - when G ordered a 涼粉 drink, the lady asked if he wanted coconut milk in it.  G just stared at her, totally horrified.

I guess after such a long time in HK, the menu/food had become a bit (we hope only a bit) localised.  However, since we already sat down, we might as well go through with it.  G ordered a fried kuey teow and I ordered Malaysian curry chicken with roti.....and......

The fried kuey teow was definitely not up to standard

Curry chicken was not as good as the ones my helper cooked

The roti was the only thing close to the real thing....
Oh well, back to our golden rule, only have Malaysian food in Malaysia!!!

Adventure #29: Forum 富臨 (CWB)

Today is G's birthday.  We are in the midst of moving into the new flat, so we decided to have a birthday lunch (as with mine but for different reasons) instead.  G is a fan of Chinese food and for lunch today, he chose Forum.  Abalone is not really a lunch thing, so we will leave that to dinner after we get our new place sorted.

As this is his birthday lunch, G ordered ALL of his favourite food (cholesterol, move aside!).

Chinese liver sausage in bun 潤腸卷

Liver Siu Mai 豬潤燒賣

G's favourite noodle 叉燒鮑汁撈

Almond Tea 杏仁茶
Food quality is very good and G's a VERY HAPPY bunny!

Adventure #28: 雅翠茶餐廳

G always said this place has one of the best roast pork in town.  A bit of a rush today but managed to get a seat for 2 and sampled the 燒肉飯.
Skin is thin and crispy.  Just enough fat on the meat.  Too much rice though.....

G also said the 干炒牛河 is also good.  Save that for my next visit.

Adventure #27: 德如茶餐廳

We usually only eat here a couple times a year and only when the weather is very cool - like today (just under 20C) Why? Coz it is HK style al fresco dining!

Food is simple but wholesome.  Usual clientele is construction workers and us.....

Very interesting store front

The drinks station or the Bar

The 例湯 is full of flavour

Our favourite dish - 梅菜扣肉飯

Adventure #26: 水記

Updated on 14 March 2012

Once again, after the kids' classes, we roamed Central in search for lunch.  Today, we tried 水記, a very old street hawker 大牌檔 at one of the "slanting street" 斜巷 Gutzlaff Street in Central.

One of the very few 大牌檔 left in HK

Table in front of a sundry shop - this is what old HK is

牛腩 noodle was great although the 牛腩 was a bit tough, may be becasue we ate too early??

Wantons were very good, kids loved them

May be because the wantons were made of fish and pork (like the Malaysian ones) rather than with prawns

Update - 14 March 2012:
Been back a couple of times since. Quality varies especially re the noodles. The last time we ate there, the alkaline taste was so strong, none of us finished our noodles. We will lay off this place for a while.

Adventure #25: 208 Duecenta Otto (Again)

Took the kids to sample the pizza at 208 Duecenta Otto.  We only eat Pizza Margherita, so that's what we ordered.  The pizza dough is very good but I think they put too much sauce on, so it is very soggy in the middle.  Good but not the best we have had.

Adventure #24: 208 Duecenta Otto

G has been (and still is) sick for the past couple weeks, his cough just won't go away.  As a result, we've been eating at home most of the time.  However, today is my birthday, it just won't do to eat at home.  So, a compromise, we decided to eat out for lunch instead.  This time, we chose 208 Duecenta Otto at the end of Hollywood Road.

Heard it is famous for its pizza but didn't feel like having pizza for lunch.  We ordered from the set lunch menu.

Instead of normal bread, we were given some pizza bread - yummy!
We had seconds :)

Prawn and clam "zuppa"

Prosciutto salad

Barbecued hanging steak - nicely done but quality of beef is not match for what we have at home

Chargrilled swordfish - nice and tender

And we finished with a very refreshing yoghurt ice cream.  Food is good.  Will come back and try a pizza.

Adventure #23: 樓外樓 (Hangzhou)

There are 4 famous restaurants in Hangzhou, 樓外樓, 天外天,山外山 and 知味觀And I was told the locals eat at the new comer 外婆家.

We tried a branch of 知味觀 on the first day.  So, before we left we went to 樓外樓 by the lake.  We were lucky to get a table out on the veranda overlooking the lake.

This is a traditional Hangzhou starter dish - lotus roots stuffed with glutinous rice (sweet)

Had to try the Tongpo Meat again - delicious but personally preferred the one at 味莊

We ordered this because it was a popular dish.  It was supposed to be a fish ball dish but the fish balls were so well made, they melted in the mouth like tofu!

The two famous dishes here are Westlake Vinegar Fish and Beggar Chicken.  Since there were only two of us, we could only eat one, so we opted for the fish.  Kinda taste like sweet and sour fish.  A bit of a waste as the vinegar over-powered the the freshness of the fish.

Adventure #22: 28 HuBin Road (Hangzhou)

A friend asked us to try the "pyramid" dish at the Chinese restaurant at Hyatt Regency Hangzhou.  As it turned out, the restaurant is called 28 HuBin Road and the dish is a healthier version of the Tongpo Meat called 招牌扣肉.

This dish was beautifully presented.  Under the pyramid of meat were winter bamboo shoots.  As this was the healthier version, the taste was not as intense.  Good but different.

We also ordered a traditional fish soup 宋嫂魚羹

Then we ordered something which is not a Hangzhou dish but a speciality of the chef Gongpo Chicken.  It was delicious!

We finished with a simple but delicious fried veggy in garlic

Adventure #21: 味莊 (Hangzhou)

Our first meal in Hangzhou was at 味莊 (Wei Zhuang) along Yanggongti 楊公堤.  The concierge at the Four Seasons Hotel strongly recommended this as, in his opinion, this restaurant cooks very good Hangzhou dishes.  We later found out that this is a branch of 知味觀, one of 4 famous restaurants in Hangzhou.

The cold braised duck was very good

Our first Tongpo Meat 東坡肉 on this trip - meat was tender and the sauce thick and sweet....yummm

The crab roe on tofu was heavenly

This dish was by far the best dish - braised fish head

Adventure #20: 烏鎮 Wuzhen

When the kids are away, the parents get to play!  This trip took us to Hangzhou but with a detour to Wuzhen, one of the famous water towns.  First meal there was a simple one - Braised Mutton Noodle but it was delicious. Wonder if it is because we were hungry......

紅燒羊肉麵

For dinner, while wondering the streets of Wuzhen, we came across an interesting little restaurant by the name of  or Spicy.  We decided to give it a try.  Food was delicious!

The spicy and sour fish soup 酸菜魚湯 was excellent

Mutton cooked in boiling oil is also superb

Even a simple fried vegetable dish is good

Adventure #19: 金龍泰美食

Kids were away, went to look for dinner at Tai Hang.  Today, we tried a little Thai eatery called 金龍泰美食.

Tom Yum Kung was so so, not spicy enough for me
Lat Na was acceptable but could be better
The surprise winner was this Fried Glass Noodle with Meat and Egg

Curry Clam was rather good

So was the Thai coffee - a bit like Malaysian coffee
Food was OK, nothing great.  Value for money though.
